Is it possible to tell the difference between a CAT 5 and a CAT 6 on cables with no markings? Both have the same number of wires and similar wire sheathing, right? I’m trying to get all my cables in order. Thank you!
You can try the following.
Contrasting Wire Gauge: CAT 6 cables often use thicker wires than CAT 5 cables. If you compare the wires side by side, you may notice a slight difference in the thickness of the individual wires.
Confirm Twisting of Pairs: CAT 5 and CAT 6 cables use twisted pairs of wires, but CAT 6 usually has tighter and more consistent twists per inch. If you can closely examine the wires, check the tightness and consistency of the twisting. CAT 6 cables tend to have better internal separation between pairs, which reduces crosstalk and improves overall performance.
Check Divider Cross: Some CAT 6 cables have a divider cross positioned between the pairs of wires inside the cable, aiming to enhance isolation and reduce crosstalk further. While this is not always present in CAT 6 cables, if you spot a divider cross, it could indicate a CAT 6 cable.
Or you can contact your cable manufacturer for confirmation.
